Wow, so it's been a while since I signed up. I forgot I was even on here. Well it's a happy accident that I found myself back here. I've posted some work I did over the past couple of months to pad my portfolio in the hopes of finding work at the New York comic con.
There are four pieces. They all started in pencil and were painted digitally. I was in a rush, busy, and lazy so I didn't get any photo references. In actuality, I think the pencils are much better than the colored versions. And I heard a lot of that at the con.
I learned a lot at the con with these. I had some guys form Wizards of the Coast critique my work and they were way cool. A lot cooler than some other guys... I won't mention names, but lets just say they're industry leaders right now in comics and concept art.
Anywho, I was hoping to get some cover work, but they won't take just anybody to do covers. ... didn't know that. Now I do. I got some good resources for gaming work, and learned some key things for next year. I'll share those with you.

If you want to show art for-

Comics: Bring paneled work. They won't even pay attention to you for work without sequential art. I imagine if you're already established as an illustrator and have a large body of work, you might be able to bypass the sequential art requirement. That's just a theory, though.
I guess no body is just a cover artist, not without paying their dues first.

Gaming art: Have a wide variety of work. I brought comic stuff to gaming people and they immediately made the distinction between comics and gaming. They were cool about it though. They want to see critters, creatures, people and environments. The biggest thing to note as well is that they are making a HUGE push to have all the art look "traditional".
I thought that was greta news, because I've been looking at a lot of concept art and even though I understand the concept, (ha) I don't like when people take a digital sketch and pass it off as final. Maybe that's just me. I'm sure the impressionists got the same crap when they first put up their paintings.

Anyways, that's what I learned. I hope it helps and I hope you enjoy the work.
